Clean Jurassic Coast joins Portland Week!

Clean Jurassic Coast is excited to be one of the guests of honour at Portland Week later this month!

Portland is an amazing place to explore our coastline and Portland Week celebrates how special our seas are, for people and nature. CJC will be joining the festivities from the 23rd to the 29th of August, so come along and say hi!

7 days of family activities including SUP, swimming and beach cleaning. There will be live music and lots of things to do, in and out of the water!

Portland Week is more than just a jam-packed week of floatable fun though, there’s a serious message too. Our seas and marine wildlife are choking on thousands of tons of plastic pollution and we need your help to do something about it. Portland Week are supporting Clean Jurassic Coast during the week, raising funds and awareness so we can help keep the coast clean of litter.

UPDATE

This year’s Portland Week event was truly brilliant and the CJC stall proved itself popular with plenty of locals and visitors chatting to us about the ways they are helping keep our beaches tidy and wildlife healthy.

In between chatting to enthusiastic beach-goers, CJC founder Roy Beal offered himself as kayak safety for the water-based events – affectionately named a ‘Merwrangler’!

The team met some amazing and like-minded souls along the way, including mermaids, Swim The Big Blue 2 Team and One Ocean Crew. We bookended the week with beach cleans and led a few litter picks in between – the rubbish collected is featured in a photo below. Thanks to all the beach cleaners and attendees who made this a very special week!

Clean Jurassic Coast's New Boat!

All that fundraising led here – a boat. The boat was bought with the money raised from the #swimjurassic challenge last summer. Now we have this engine we can really hit the hard to reach places and clean up.

Here she is!

The Clean Jurassic Coast boat had its maiden voyage in on the 29th of April.

A massive thank you to Portland Marina boatfolk and Marine Power Services for this lovely and efficient Yamaha. Thanks to them we have this engine on loan but some fundraising in the summer at their Berth Holders party should cover the cost of it. Any shortfall will be paid by us of course.

Why petrol and not electric? Quite simply – range and power. This boat has a 700kg payload capacity and electric outboard just aren’t quite there yet for the missions we will be doing.
This is the start of a beautiful collaboration between Portland Marina and Clean Jurassic Coast CIC. Together we will be constantly keeping the Jurassic Coast as clean as we can. Together we will remove as much marine plastic and other waste from the environment, educate boat owners and fishermen and make the area a better and safer place for the local wildlife. We already picked up a few bits on the maiden voyage, including a bone wrapped in fishing line.

The boat was bought with the money raised from #swimjurassic challenge last summer. That was when Oliver Rush swam and I kayaked the Jurassic Coast and beyond – a distance of 100 miles. Now we have this engine we can really hit the hard to reach places and clean up.

Great Dorset Beach Clean (22nd & 23rd May 2021)

Clean Jurassic Coast are joining the Great Dorset Beach Clean with Litter Free Coast and Sea! On Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd of May, we will be tidying up beaches across Dorset – come and join us!

Clean Jurassic Coast are proud to be a part of the Great Dorset Beach Clean with Litter Free Coast and Sea. This is a yearly effort to help reduce marine and beach litter and improve and maintain bathing water quality at source.

There are 21 beach cleans arranged over the weekend and we are hosting 3 of them at Seatown, Chesil Cove and Chapman’s Pool. Attendance is by booking only, follow the link below.

Our numbers are limited to 12 per clean so hurry up!

100 miles in 24 hours

Derek Billings, a Lulworth ranger, has dared to do the unimaginable – attempt to run the entire Jurassic Coast (100 miles with all the twists and turns) in one push. Not only that, he plans to do this in 24 hours!

Derek works on England’s only natural World Heritage Site – The Jurassic Coast, specifically at Lulworth and Durdle Door, two of the busiest locations along the 95 mile stretch of incredible geology and landscapes.

During the past summer, Derek was involved in the publicity campaign to keep the area free of litter, after a surge in domestic tourism resulted in awful amounts of litter.

This year, Derek will be raising funds for Clean Jurassic Coast, to aid our ongoing commitment to keep the Jurassic Coast clean so that the vast array of wildlife get to live in their natural environment, millions of visitors may enjoy it and future generations can marvel at its history for ever more.

How will he do this? Derek will attempt to run the entire Jurassic Coast (100 miles with all the twists and turns) in one push. Not only that, he plans to do this in 24 hours!

The date of the run will be late April/early May depending on the weather. Better get training!

Update – Derek will start his run on Saturday the 15th of May

Top down kayak challenge

Join Roy, founder of Clean Jurassic Coast, as he kayaks across Britain to raise awareness about the impacts of littering and plastic pollution. Read on to find out about the Top Down Kayak Challenge!

2020 was a funny old year wasn’t it? Lock-downs and and a pandemic, nobody travelling abroad for their holidays, beaches left in such a bad state thanks to some very selfish visitors. Myself and my Clean Jurassic Team spent a lot of the summer collecting bag after bag of rubbish, ultimately collecting well over 2000kg of plastic from the beaches, coast paths and the sea.

Oly Rush swam the entire Jurassic Coast in an effort to raise money for environmental charities and I was his kayak support. The 100 mile swim took 10 days and we collected litter along the way, but also found dead animals and seabirds, some entangled in fishing line.

We continue to collect plastic and other litter but feel there is a lack of awareness about the effects littering can have so I am going to kayak Britain and try to raise that awareness to new heights. The map shows my 900 mile route, I’ll be setting off in late May, if COVID restrictions allow, and I shall kayak the sea, canals, rivers and lakes. for information and to donate please visit www.kayakingforcharity.co.uk. Swim Jurassic Challenge September 2020

Oly Rush, one of the Clean Jurassic Coast team, swims the entire 96 miles of the Jurassic Coast to raise money for CJC and GoPladdle.

“I have an overwhelming urge to do all I can to protect the environment and all creatures who call it their home. I’m an ocean advocate and I started up the Instagram page @_projectplanet_ to share images from our beach cleans, as well as to raise awareness about the devastating effect litter and plastic pollution has on our oceans. This platform has introduced me to many like-minded people who have become my friends.”

Roy Beal, the founder of Clean Jurassic Coast, kayaked alongside Oly. Roy has a lot of experience in supporting sea swimmers and was responsible for planning the trip around the fickle weather, the tides and various currents that dominate the coast. The many headlands along the way threw ‘tide races’ at the pair of them, as well as shallow and rocky waters when ventured too close to shore.

Why on earth (or sea) would this pair of nutters be doing such a challenge?

Oly. “Two organisations I work with closely are Clean Jurassic Coast and Gopladdle. Both of these groups work incredibly hard and are in need of money for essential equipment to enable them to carry out the work they do.”

Roy. “The money will be spent on safety equipment for the volunteers, as well as help with the day-to-day costs of running these kinds of organisations. At this present time, they are mainly funded by the volunteers themselves, with a little help from members of the public. The two organisations will not just be litter picking though, they will also be educating school groups and businesses in an effort to help reduce plastic use and littering. It’s an ongoing battle and the generosity of our supporters will ensure we can make a difference.”

With an ever-increasing contingent of volunteers helping the main Clean Jurassic Coast and Gopladde teams, there is a need to increase the amount of specialist equipment and safety apparel.

A final word from Oly. “Please, please share this far and wide and if you can donate, even a small amount, it will make a huge difference. Every penny raised will go towards cleaning our beaches, preventing litter from reaching the ocean in the first place and help resolve the many other environmental issues our planet faces.

CJC Champions start fundraiser!

7 Jurassic Coast beaches in 7 days!

CJC Champions Rhea and Dave challenge themselves to a week of beach cleans to raise money to aid Clean Jurassic Coast efforts.

Rhea and Dave, a volunteer couple who recently became Clean Jurassic Coast Champions, have started a fundraising page on Just Giving. The pair of them will be cleaning 7 Jurassic Coast beaches in 7 days, no matter the weather, with any money raised going to help us fund safety equipment and our various other running costs.

Crowdfunding galore!

It’s the season for a good challenge and there are some very kind-hearted souls out there who have challenged themselves to raise money to help Clean Jurassic Coast and other worthy causes.

The money raised from these Crowd-funders will go towards the costs of running CJC, pay for equipment and also help us to educate schools and businesses. As we are not a registered charity, the fundraising is done as a crowd-funder through Just Giving.

In July 2020, CJC Champions Rhea and Dave cleaned 7 beaches in 7 days for CJC. Find out more here.

In August 2020, CJC’s Anna and her friend Izzy planned to walk the Jurassic Coast for CJC and Sarcoma UK. Due to bad weather and injuries, they haven’t finished their challenge yet, but stay tuned! They have raised an amazing £1,661 so far. Find out more here.

Also in August 2020, CJC’s Oly swam the Jurassic Coast for CJC and Gopladdle. After swimming the coast in 10 days, he then swam even further to pass the 100 mile mark! Oly raised an astounding £9,590 for both causes. Find out about the challenge here and the final result here.
